It's all in the bag...

This is a girly post, but I was looking at makeup online and reading reviews on what's been rated Absolute Best by Instyle Magazine. And I got to thinking...sure this is probably great makeup, but $50+ for eye shadow?! Come on. I couldn't spend that much on makeup and ever feel good about it. But I like doing makeup and so I figured I'd share some of my favorite makeup products to those who won't spend a ton of money on products either.

I've gone through tons!!! of mascaras. I've tried literally dozens and keep going back to the same one. Tyler tells me I'm actually not allowed to buy any new mascaras until I've really thought about it and remembered my history with mascara. I'll see a great ad on tv, want that mascara, buy it, but because I'm so picky when it comes to mascara, I wont like the new one very much, I'll barely use it and end up going back to my favorite. I remember cleaning out my makeup bag one day and throwing away 12 mascaras (while still keeping some... sad I know) So pretty much every kind I've tried and I've got to say Maybelline's Full and Soft mascara is my favorite. It's what I keep going back to.

Another favorite is Mary-Kate and Ashley's Creme Eye Color. I've tried it in 3 different sets and I've loved all 3. It's basically what I use everyday. They're really inexpensive and go on so smooth. They're good for bases or for your main color and it's easy to blend. (Mine have never come with the bonus body jewels this one comes with... too bad... haha)

I've tried all sorts of eye liners too... from pencils to liquids. I've found that I really like Maybelline's Expert Eye Crayon. It goes on a whole lot smoother than pencils. I recommend any crayon over pencils, but I really like this one. Mostly because it's cheap and it lasts a long time. Not only on your eye lids, but also as an eyeliner. I've used eyeliners that I swear must disappear while I'm not looking because they just run out so quickly. I've found Maybelline carries the best for the buck generally.Oh, one other is Jane Eyeshadow. I love this stuff. The makeup I bought for my wedding is Jane brand (a couple eye shadows and a bronzer). I bought it because it was pretty cheap and they had the colors I was looking for. The brown eye shadow I've used everyday since I bought it for our wedding and you can't even tell there's been much use. (And there were many days when working at a restaurant that I'd come home midday, take a shower, and need to reapply makeup again.) I feel like it's never ending. Great stuff. There's a great website that sells E.L.F. makeup. E.L.F. stands for Eyes Lips Face and almost all their makeup is just a dollar. I haven't bought from them yet, but my sister-in-law has. She told me that although the makeup comes in smaller sizes, the makeup is actually pretty good quality, so you end up using less of it anyway.

Anyway... there's more I can mention, but I'll stick to these for now. I want to know what makeup other people have found they love. What are your staples?

  1. What a fun post! I love that you shared your favorites with us. I'll have to try some :). Being a makeup novice, I don't really have any great tips. However, I really love Proactiv products. They're expensive, but it's the ONLY thing that's worked for my easily irritated skin.

  2. Oh yeah, what's your favorite lip product? Any great long lasting gloss or lipstick that you love that doesn't smell or taste bad?

  4. Thanks for leaving us a message! It was a great surprise to hear from you. And I loved your makeup tips. I am totally going to use them. I have problems myself finding the right kind of makeup, so this will be very helpful!

  5. hey I like that mascara, too! I just saw that it was on sale at Target for like 4 bucks... at least I think it said 3.99... I should have looked again. But I'm pretty sure it said 3.99. Which is sort of insane, now that I think about it. I should have bought some... but I don't wear makeup very often and I still have some mascara. I've used e.l.f. lip gloss before (I got it at Target in the travel size aisle, actually) and while it came in a pack of three, I only use one. It's a great color, though, and it doesn't bug me with its texture, like most lip glosses do.

  8. hey! thanks for your comment. here's the crepe recipe. I don't make it the traditional way with the bowl and making a depression in the flour for the egg and everything... I just put all the liquids in the blender and blend those first. Then I add the flour last, gradually (either a 1/4 or a 1/3 cup at a time). Here are the ingredients: 1 cup all-purpose flour, 2 eggs, 1/2 cup milk, 1/2 cup water, 2 tablespoons melted butter. You can also add a pinch of salt, too, but I never do and it's fine. Anyway, then you just pour a little batter straight from the blender onto a greased/sprayed hot (I usually use medium heat to med.-high heat) frying pan (medium to large) and then swirl the pan until the bottom is evenly coated with batter. Cook until the edges are sort of peeling up or when the crepe looks dry. Then loosen the edges with a spatula if they're not loose already and flip the crepe. The other side doesn't take very long to cook - maybe 30 seconds, depending on how hot your pan is. Then just slide it out onto your plate and it's ready to eat! Do you already know what you like on crepes or do you want suggestions for toppings? Oh and let me know if I wasn't very clear... I have the recipe memorized so hopefully I gave you enough detail!

  9. well, for filling/topping whatever I really like using berries and fruit and stuff like that. I think bananas and caramel sauce, for instance, is wonderful. So are bananas and nutella. I also like lemon juice with lots of powdered sugar dissolved in it as a filling. Obviously the point of these are to be tasty... not healthy. Lots of sugar in these. I also really like making a sauce out of sour cream and brown sugar. It sounds kind of weird but it tastes awesome. I use that sauce usually with strawberries, but as you saw on my post, I like it with other things, too. To make that, though, just spoon a little sour cream onto your crepe and then a couple spoonfuls of brown sugar before you mix it together right there on your crepe. You can vary the amounts until you think it tastes good (if you even like sour cream, that is). Sometimes to start with I also spread a little butter on a hot crepe so that it melts. Jared likes bananas, whipped cream, and chocolate sauce on his crepes. Anyway, that's all I can think of right now.

  10. I actually just recently discovered E.L.F., and it's really good and really cheap. Plus, I also got a coupon code that made everything 50% off, so you're basically getting all this awesome stuff for 50 cents! So if you decide to buy from there, try typing "Carolina" in the coupon code. Hopefully it still works.
